What is EMDR:
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a structured and evidence-based practice designed to help individuals process and overcome traumatic experiences.
During traumatic events, the brain processes and stores memories incorrectly. This incorrect storage, when triggered by an activating event, can send the body and brain into a fight, flight or freeze response. EMDR therapy corrects this mis-storage so that the painful memories associated with the trauma lose their charge. By reprocessing these memories in a new and less distressing way, you can reduce the impact they have on your daily life and improve your overall well-being.
What is an EMDR Session Like:
EMDR therapy begins with a thorough assessment and development of a treatment plan. You will then be guided to recall the traumatic event while simultaneously engaging in a specific form of bilateral stimulation. This can be accomplished through eye movements, taps, or tones.
The bilateral stimulation is thought to activate the brain's natural healing processes, helping you to process the traumatic event in a more adaptive way. This can help reduce the intensity of your emotional and physical reactions to the trauma and allow you to move forward in your life.
EMDR therapy typically involves several phases, including assessment and preparation, identifying the traumatic event, processing the trauma, and consolidation. The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity of the trauma and individual needs.
